Patience is a Virtue

Success Story

I started looking for a job in January, following eleven years of being at home raising my three children who are all in school now. Everyone told me this was not the time to try and re-enter the workforce with such a gap, but the heart wants what it wants, so I pursued every interesting position I could find on Monster, Careerbuilder, Indeed, etc.

We had moved to a different region of the country since my previous employment, so my working contacts were not relevant to my area. I met with a friend who works in Healthcare and she told me to start reaching out to anyone and everyone I know in the industry and ask them out for coffee. She also recommended one company in particular and said she'd forward my resume to someone she knew there. I went home and researched the company and found out the mother of one of my daughter's friends was the COO of the company! So, I immediately emailed her to invite her for coffee. We hit it off and she seemed very interested in me.

Seven months and eight interviews later, I was still pursuing them. So many people told me to move on. I finally started pursuing other companies and foraging for contacts. I was gaining momentum and keeping my contact at the original company aprised of my progress. Once she heard I was interviewing elsewhere, the offer came through!

Advice for Job Seekers

When you find the company you really want to work for, find a way to build a contact there and don't let go. At the same time, don't become a pest. I constantly reminded myself not to give them ANY reason not to hire me. Also, until you receive a "no" assume a "yes" is still on the table.
